Vinca major 'Variegata'

An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, this variegated greater periwinkle brings dependable good looks to shady corners where little else performs. Glossy, ovate leaves are edged in creamy-white, forming a low, spreading clump of upright flowering stems alongside long trailing ones that root as they go. Violet-blue flowers, 4–5cm across, appear from spring right through to autumn, giving months of colour against the pale foliage.

Easy to grow in all but the driest soils, it flowers best in full sun but earns its keep in deep shade too, making it a reliable groundcover for banks, slopes, and awkward corners. Reaching around 45cm in height with a spread of up to 2.5m, it's a vigorous grower that can become a nuisance if left unchecked, so give it room or trim back annually.
