An RHS Award of Garden Merit winner, Tulipa humilis 'Little Beauty' is a charming dwarf species tulip prized for its unusual, painterly colour banding. Each single flower opens with a crimson-red majority to the top petals, fading through light purple edged with a thin band of pale pink, down to a dark purple centre — a striking, jewel-like effect best appreciated up close. Held above neat, strap-like green foliage, the flowers open wide on sunny days to reveal their colourful hearts.

Reaching just 10-15cm in height, this tulip is fully hardy and, unlike many larger hybrid tulips, can be left in the ground to naturalise, building into generous clumps over the years. Best planted in autumn, 10-15cm deep, in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from strong winds and protection from excessive wet. Ideal for rockeries, alpine troughs, gravel gardens or the front of sunny borders.
