For a naturally charming, informal spring display, this Narcissus Species Mixed pack brings together an assortment of dwarf, wild-type and species narcissi in shades of sunny yellow through to creamy white. Unlike the larger, more formal hybrid daffodils, species types have a delicate, airy grace — smaller flowers, often multi-headed, with the same reliable good nature that's made narcissi one of the easiest bulbs to grow well.

Plant in autumn at around 10cm deep, in full sun or partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. These are wonderfully forgiving bulbs that establish readily in almost any reasonable garden soil, and with a generous 50 in the pack, there's plenty here to scatter freely for a proper naturalised effect — the classic method is to toss the bulbs by hand and plant them where they land, for a look that's never regimented.

Typically reaching 15–25cm depending on variety, this mix is ideally suited to rockeries, the front of borders, drifts through grass, and areas beneath deciduous trees, where the bulbs will flower and multiply happily for years before the trees come into leaf. Leave foliage to die back naturally after flowering (usually by June) rather than cutting or mowing it early, as this is what feeds the bulb for the following season. As with all narcissi, the bulbs and sap are harmful if eaten and can irritate skin and eyes, so handle with care and keep away from pets and children.

Each bulb is hand-selected before dispatch. Available from Pengelly Garden Centre.
