Panicum virgatum 'Sangria' 2ltr
Panicum virgatum 'Sangria'
A compact and vibrantly coloured switch grass, Panicum virgatum 'Sangria' brings rich autumn colour to the garden earlier and more intensely than most. Upright, mid-green leaves develop striking red tones as summer progresses, deepening to a rich reddish-brown by late summer and holding this colour well into autumn. Small, airy red-brown flower panicles appear above the foliage in late summer, adding a light, feathery texture.
Noticeably shorter and more compact than many switch grass cultivars, 'Sangria' reaches around 0.8–1m in height with a spread of roughly 0.2–0.6m, making it a versatile choice for smaller borders, gravel gardens, or container planting where its fiery colouring can take centre stage. It combines particularly well with late-flowering perennials such as Echinacea or aster.
Easy to grow and low maintenance, 'Sangria' thrives in full sun in any moderately fertile, well-drained soil, and copes well with drought once established. Cut back to ground level in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
