Hamamelis × intermedia 'Jelena'

Named for renowned Belgian plantswoman Jelena de Belder and a holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Hamamelis × intermedia 'Jelena' is deservedly considered one of the finest witch hazels. In late winter, its bare branches are clustered with lightly fragrant, spidery flowers in a striking coppery-orange, each with four narrow, ribbon-like petals backed by a claret-red calyx, curling up on frosty days and unfurling again as milder weather returns. Earlier in the year, the broad, green, hazel-like leaves put on their own show, turning rich shades of orange, red, and yellow in autumn before falling to reveal the shrub's graceful, tiered, vase-shaped framework.

A large, vigorous deciduous shrub, 'Jelena' typically reaches around 4m in height and spread over 10 to 20 years, making it best suited to larger gardens as a specimen shrub or a striking feature in a winter border. It tolerates some exposure and grows well in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained, acid to neutral soil enriched with organic matter. Prune only lightly, after flowering, to maintain a healthy shape.
