Gardenia jasminoides 'Double Diamonds'

A vigorous, upright gardenia prized for its large, waxy white double blooms, scrolled like tiny roses and carrying that unmistakable, heady gardenia fragrance from midsummer through autumn. The lustrous, deep green evergreen foliage provides year-round interest, making this an easier-to-grow cultivar than many older gardenia varieties, while still delivering the same showstopping flowers.

A naturally compact, dense-growing shrub reaching a maximum height of around 90cm with a spread of about 70cm, needing little to no pruning to keep its well-balanced shape. Best in a sheltered spot in partial shade — morning sun with filtered afternoon shade suits it well — in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil that's neutral to acidic; it can develop chlorosis on lime-rich ground, so an ericaceous compost is worth using in pots. It's frost hardy but appreciates protection in severe winters, and makes an excellent specimen for a patio container as well as a sheltered border.
