Allium atropurpureum 12 bulbs

A dramatic, deeply coloured ornamental onion, Allium atropurpureum produces dense, hemispherical umbels packed with rich, almost black-purple star-shaped flowers, held on tall, sturdy stems above broad, strappy foliage. Flowering in late spring and early summer, its intense, moody colouring makes a striking contrast against silver-leaved companions or paler perennials, and the dried seed heads continue to provide architectural interest well into autumn.

Reaching up to 100cm in height, this variety is best planted in autumn, 10-15cm deep, in well-drained soil in full sun. Like other alliums, it thrives in poorer, free-draining soils and dislikes winter waterlogging, so improve heavy clay with grit before planting. As with the wider onion family, the foliage and flowers have a distinct oniony scent when bruised or crushed.
