Taylors Bulbs Allium Collection (40)

A brilliant way to fill a border with allium drama from late spring right through into summer, without having to choose just one variety. This collection brings together four favourites — the deep maroon-purple, star-studded globes of 'Atropurpureum'; the huge, silvery-lilac, firework-like heads of Allium christophii; the compact, wine-red drumsticks of Allium sphaerocephalon; and the quirky, spidery, deep purple-red blooms of 'Pin Ball Wizard'. Together they stagger flowering from May through to July, giving weeks of interest rather than one short burst.

Plant from August onwards, roughly three times the bulb's depth, in full sun and free-draining soil — heavy or waterlogged ground is the main thing alliums dislike, so work in some grit or compost if needed. All are easy-going and hardy, returning and gradually bulking up year after year with little attention once established. Heights and flower sizes vary across the collection, from the more compact sphaerocephalon and Pin Ball Wizard to the taller, showier Atropurpureum and christophii, so plant in informal groups for the best natural effect.

Bees and other pollinators are drawn to all four varieties, while deer and rabbits tend to leave them well alone. As with all alliums, the bulbs and foliage are toxic if ingested, so bear this in mind in gardens visited by pets or grazing animals.
