Small white flowers appear in summer, but they play a supporting role to the foliage, which is the real star. A UK garden-centre discovery, found by chance amongst a batch of ordinary Leucothoe plants by Dutch grower Ron van Opstal.

A compact, mounding shrub, generally reaching around 40 to 75cm in height with a spread of 60cm to 1 metre, making it a versatile choice for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or patio containers. Grow in partial to full shade — it will tolerate full sun if the soil stays reliably moist — in fertile, well-drained, acidic soil, using an ericaceous compost mix in containers where garden soil isn't naturally acidic. Prune only lightly in early spring to tidy the shape; as a member of the Ericaceae family, all parts are toxic if ingested.

Each plant is hand-selected before dispatch.
