Dryopteris affinis (Golden-scaled Male Fern)

A robust, statuesque fern that brings real presence to the shade garden. In spring, bright chartreuse-green fronds unfurl from a stout, upright rosette, their stems clothed in distinctive golden-brown scales — a striking contrast that gives the plant its common name. As the season progresses, the fronds mature to a rich, glossy green and often persist well into winter, giving structure and colour to shady corners long after many perennials have died back.

Robust and semi-evergreen, 'affinis' forms a handsome, shuttlecock-shaped clump of finely divided, arching fronds. It's an excellent choice for woodland planting, shady borders and difficult, dry-shade sites where little else thrives, and makes a fine architectural companion to hostas, hellebores and other shade-loving perennials. Non-toxic to pets, it's a safe option for gardens shared with cats and dogs.

Grow in moist, well-drained, neutral to acidic soil in partial to full shade, though it will tolerate drier conditions once established. An annual mulch of well-rotted organic matter helps retain moisture and keeps the crown in good health. Old, tired fronds can be tidied away in early spring to make way for the new season's growth. Reaching a substantial 90–120cm (3–4ft) in height with a spread of around 60–90cm (2–3ft), and fully hardy throughout the UK, it makes a bold, low-maintenance addition to any shaded planting scheme.
