Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy'

Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, Cercis canadensis 'Forest Pansy' is grown chiefly for its spectacular foliage, with broadly heart-shaped leaves emerging a deep, glossy red-purple before mellowing through the summer and turning striking shades of orange, bronze, and red-purple again in autumn. In a warm, sheltered spot, small clusters of bright pink, pea-like flowers also appear on the bare stems in spring, just before the leaves unfurl.

A large deciduous shrub or small, often multi-stemmed tree, 'Forest Pansy' typically reaches around 4–8m in height and spread at full maturity, though it stays considerably more modest for many years, making it a popular choice for smaller gardens, courtyards, and patios, or trained at the back of a border or against a wall. It grows best in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade, with some afternoon shade appreciated in hot summers. It's important to plant it in its final position while young, as Cercis resents being transplanted once established, and it should never be fed with artificial fertiliser after planting.
