Ceratostigma griffithii (Griffith's plumbago)

A native of the Himalayas and western China, Ceratostigma griffithii is a semi-evergreen, woody sub-shrub prized for its late-season colour, producing clusters of vivid, bright blue flowers from late summer well into autumn, just as many other shrubs are winding down. The bristly, hairy foliage, attractively outlined in purple-brown, puts on its own display as the season progresses, turning rich, plummy red shades in autumn.

A compact, rounded, much-branched shrub, Ceratostigma griffithii typically reaches around 50cm to 1m in both height and spread, making it a good fit for sunny borders, gravel gardens, banks and slopes, or containers on a patio, and it works particularly well at the base of a warm, sheltered wall. It needs full sun and well-drained soil, and is fairly drought-tolerant once established, though it flowers most freely with reasonable summer moisture and warmth. It's hardy through most of the UK, though it may suffer some foliage damage or dieback in harsh winters in colder gardens; if this happens, cut flowered shoots back hard in spring, as it will readily regrow.
