Azalea 'Stewartstonian' 10ltr pot
Azalea 'Stewartstonian'
A Gable hybrid bred in the USA and named after Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, Azalea 'Stewartstonian' is a dense, spreading evergreen azalea valued for its vivid, funnel-shaped red flowers with a subtle reddish-orange tint along the petals and faint red spotting, appearing in late spring. The glossy, dark green foliage puts on its own display through the colder months, taking on rich mahogany-red tints in winter before returning to green in spring.
In UK growing conditions, 'Stewartstonian' typically reaches up to around 1.2m in height with a similarly generous spread, making it a good choice for borders, mass planting, informal hedging, or as a specimen shrub, and it's a reliable draw for bees and butterflies. It grows well in full sun to partial shade and needs moist but well-drained, humus-rich, acidic soil, so plant with ericaceous compost, mulch annually, and choose a site sheltered from frost pockets and strong winds. All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten, so gloves are recommended when handling and pruning.
