Aralia cordata 'Sun King'

A real showpiece for brightening shadier corners of the garden. This architectural herbaceous perennial forms a bold, tropical-looking clump of large, compound leaves that emerge a vivid golden-yellow in spring, holding their colour beautifully where the plant gets a few hours of sun each day (in deeper shade, the foliage settles to a softer lime-green). In late summer, airy spikes of tiny white flowers appear, followed by ornamental purple-black berries — striking, but not for eating.

Herbaceous and deciduous, 'Sun King' dies back fully in winter and re-emerges vigorously each spring, quickly forming a substantial, shrub-like clump around 1–1.5m in height and spread within just a couple of years. It's happy in full sun or partial shade in a moist but well-drained soil, and appreciates some shelter from wind to protect its large leaves. Fully hardy and needing no pruning, it's a superb architectural companion for hostas, ferns and other woodland-style planting, and was named Perennial Plant of the Year in 2020.
